Marine turtles Six of the worlds seven species of marine turtle occur on the Huge Barrier Reef with globally meaningful nesting areas for four of these found in the Region. This tall number of diverse species is largely due to the Marine Park's variety of relevant habitat. About 600 diverse types of coral can be found in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and all of them reach in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Despite looking like plants, these corals are actually colonies of very little animals called coral polyps which are closely related to jellyfish. A number of animals, such as different species of fish, prawns and sea slugs, like to make their home in the branches of easy corals. Coastal ecosystems bear a range of ecological services that support the Reef, including water distribution, food and habitat, and nutrient and chemical cycling.
